Meissen (Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Meissen, Germany)
"The first porcelain manufactory in Europe", founded in 1710, still employs traditional methods, factory-trained artists and hand painting. Their design range covers "an estimated 150.000 articles", and can draw on 100.000 more "documents and moulds." Read about their history and marks; special editions; and services such as restorations and painting seminars. An archived page briefly describes their role in restoring Dresden's Fuerstenzug (Procession of Princes), an immense handpainted porcelain tile panel "on the outer wall of the City Castle's Royal Stabling Yard".
The Porzellanmuseum displays about 3,000 pieces from its large Meissen collection, ranging from thimbles to huge vases and centrepieces. Its demonstration workshops show pieces being made and painted, and guided tours cater for foreign languages. Other resources include a list of authorised retailers and a friends' club. http://www.meissen.de/ In English & German.
