China Painting List

The Future of The China Painting List

To my new readers, Welcome, and I hope that you enjoy your visit; and to my regular visitors, Welcome back.

It's hard to believe, but as of last November I've been compiling The List for 9 years. It has grown enormously in that time - it now has over 1070 entries - and I must have spent many hundreds of hours keeping it going.

I've enjoyed most of my time as editor, especially hearing from fellow artists around the world. The task has grown far more than I ever expected, however, and really needs more time than I can afford to give. I've therefore decided to cut back on the subjects covered in The List, and to make some change to my newsletter.

Firstly the subjects, which I call Categories… If you haven't looked at them recently, they're listed here. They're quite wide-ranging and include topics related to porcelain painting, such as kiln and paint manufacturers. Since I can no longer cover them all, I'll be concentrating more on adding personal sites (hopefully including some of the non-English sites not listed previously because of time restraints). I'll gradually drop some of the Categories I used to cover, starting with:
  • Brushmakers
  • Kilnmakers
  • Paint Manufacturers
  • Marks (pottery marks)
  • Organisations (Friends, collectors' societies, etc.)
Now for the changes I'll be making to the newsletter. I don't want to set a subscription price, but I do need some help with the costs involved. I've therefore decided to issue the newsletter in two versions: a 'free' abbreviated issue, and a full-text 'paid' issue. The full version will be the same as the newsletter you receive now. It will cost a yearly donation – of any amount. Yes, there's really no fixed fee: you can give whatever you feel it's worth to you. (Let me emphasize now that I am grateful – very grateful – for the occasional donations I have received to date. That's why I am crediting previous donors with a year's subscription to start with.) After a year I will ask for another donation, or offer a switch to the abbreviated newsletter. The abbreviated newsletter will be totally free, but will give only the most basic information about new listings; e.g. the names of artists, studios, etc. It will not link to the sites, and will not describe them: for that, you will have to visit The List itself. Changes to the newsletter will take some time to introduce, since I also want to look into alternate ways of accepting donations (my present donations page only works with Paypal). I'll update this page when there's some further news.

Despite the above, it's not too late to express an opinion - so if you have a suggestion, please write in and let me know.

Now please take the time to visit and enjoy some of the wonderful sites you'll find listed in these pages.
